A calfskin is one of the softest, most elegant hides in the collection: supple, luxurious, and each one unique. Below, I’ll explain why, how it compares to a mini cowhide, and how to use it.
Why choose a calfskin?
The best thing about a calfskin is its softness and suppleness. Calfskin is naturally more supple and softer than regular cowhide, which makes it feel extra luxurious to the touch and perfect for draping. It also brings warmth and a refined, natural atmosphere to any room. And thanks to its medium size, it fits anywhere: as a small rug, draped over your furniture, or as a decorative accent. A calfskin rug is therefore a versatile, stylish addition that fits right into any interior.
Calfskin or mini cowhide?
These two terms are sometimes confused, so it’s good to know: a calfskin is not the same as a mini cowhide.
- Calfskin: comes from calves and has its own natural shape and size. As a result, each hide varies slightly in size, and calfskin is naturally extra soft and supple.
- Mini cowhide: cut from an adult cowhide, so it always has the same fixed size of 90 x 60 cm and the sturdier texture of a cowhide.
So if you’re looking for that extra-soft, naturally shaped hide, calfskins are the way to go. If, on the other hand, you’d prefer a standard size with the familiar cowhide look, check out our mini cowhides.
How to use a calfskin hide
Thanks to their convenient size and suppleness, the possibilities are endless:
- As a rug: place a calfskin in front of the fireplace or TV. It breaks up a large, empty floor and instantly adds warmth and ambiance.
- As a throw on your furniture: because it’s so soft and supple, it drapes beautifully over the back of your sofa, a chair, or an ottoman, creating a warm, luxurious look.
- As a table decoration: use it as a unique base on a table or cabinet, with a beautiful decorative piece placed on top.
- For further crafting: because the leather is so soft and supple, you can also use it to create beautiful items such as bags, jewelry, and other accessories.
Each hide is unique in color and shape
Just like our large cowhides, every calfskin is a natural product: no two are alike in color, pattern, or shape, and all shades are natural and never dyed. From soft solid colors to playful three-color patterns, you’ll always find a hide that suits your interior. Since these are one-of-a-kind pieces, the selection changes constantly; if you see one you like, that’s the one.

Care: very low maintenance
You care for a calfskin just like you would a cowhide, a mini cowhide, or a goatskin—and it’s very little work. How much depends on how you use it: as a rug, it’ll have to endure more wear and tear than if it’s draped over the back of your couch. Calfskin has a short nap, so vacuum it occasionally on a low setting without a rotating brush. Dab any stains with a slightly damp cloth. You can find detailed tips under “Caring for and Cleaning Cowhides.”
Complete the look
Want to give your interior the perfect finishing touch? Pair your calfskin with a large cowhide or a mini cowhide, with cowhide pillows or coasters, or place a soft sheepskin next to it for extra warmth.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a calfskin?
A calfskin comes from a calf and has its own natural shape and size. Calfskin is known for its exceptional softness and suppleness, which makes it luxurious to the touch and perfect for draping.
What’s the difference between a calfskin and a mini cowhide?
A calfskin comes from a calf; it’s naturally extra soft and supple and has its own natural shape, so each hide varies in size. A mini cowhide is cut from an adult cowhide, always has a standard size of 90 x 60 cm, and features the sturdier texture of a cowhide. They are, therefore, two different products.
What are the dimensions of a calfskin hide?
A medium, manageable size, comparable to a mini cowhide, but since each calfskin has its own natural shape, the size varies per hide. The dimensions are listed for each hide.
Are the calfskins dyed?
No. I sell only hides in their natural color. The color and grain come from the animal itself.
Will I receive the exact calfskin shown in the photo?
Yes. Each hide is photographed, measured, and numbered individually. The hide in the photo is exactly the one you’ll receive—one of a kind.
How do I care for a calfskin hide?
Just like a cowhide, which requires very little maintenance. Calfskin is short-haired: vacuum it occasionally on a low setting, without a rotating brush. Dab any stains with a slightly damp cloth. You can find detailed tips on maintaining and cleaning cowhides.
