The mini cowhide is one of my most special products: small, exclusive, and each one is unique. Below, I’ll explain exactly what it is, why it’s not a calfskin, and how to use it.
What is a mini cowhide?
A mini cowhide is die-cut from an adult cowhide. The tannery regularly has large cowhides that don’t qualify as A-grade, for example due to scuff marks, holes, or other damage. To ensure these hides aren’t wasted, the tannery cuts mini cowhides from the beautiful, undamaged parts. This way, nothing goes to waste, and you get a unique small hide with the same luxurious look as a large hide. A mini cowhide always has a standard size of 90 × 60 cm, which makes it extra convenient to plan with.
A mini cowhide is not a calfskin
This is a common mistake, so it’s important to know: a mini cowhide is not a calfskin. The difference lies in the animal and its origin:
- Mini cowhide: comes from an adult cow, cut from a larger hide. This gives it the familiar cowhide texture and pattern, and a standard, rectangular size of 90 × 60 cm.
- Calfskin: comes from a calf. These hides are naturally smaller, extra soft and supple, and each has its own natural shape and size.
Both are beautiful and small, but they’re different products. If you’re looking for that extra-soft, naturally shaped hide, check out the calf hides.
How do you use a mini cowhide?
It’s precisely because of its compact size that a mini cowhide is surprisingly versatile:
- As a small rug: a striking accent for the living room, bedroom, entryway, or kids’ room that instantly adds atmosphere and warmth.
- For your furniture: drape it over a chair, the back of a sofa, or an ottoman for a luxurious, warm look.
- As a table decoration: use it as a unique table runner, with a nice tray or a vase of flowers on top.
- As wall decor: hang it on the wall instead of a painting for a surprising eye-catcher.
- For crafting and DIY projects: if you only need a small piece of leather, a mini cowhide provides beautiful material for bags, jewelry, or other accessories.
Each hide is unique in color and pattern
Just like the large cowhides, each mini hide is a natural product: no two are alike in color or pattern. From black-and-white and brown-and-white to more unique combinations: you’ll always find a hide that matches your interior. Since these are one-of-a-kind pieces, the selection changes constantly; if you see one you like, that’s the one.

Care: very low maintenance
You care for a mini cowhide just like a large one, and it’s very low-maintenance. How much care it needs depends on how you use it: as a small rug, it’ll take more of a beating than if it’s draped over the back of your couch. Cowhides have short hair, so vacuum it occasionally on a low setting without a rotating brush. And because it’s so small, you can easily shake it out. Dab any stains with a slightly damp cloth. You can find more detailed tips under “Cowhide Care and Cleaning.”

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a mini cowhide?
A small piece of a full-sized, mature cowhide. The tannery cuts it from the undamaged parts of a large hide that can’t be classified as A-grade due to imperfections. That way, nothing goes to waste. A mini cowhide always has a standard size of 90 × 60 cm.
Is a mini cowhide the same as a calfskin?
No. A mini cowhide comes from an adult cow and is cut from a larger hide, with a standard size of 90 × 60 cm. A calfskin comes from a calf, is naturally smaller and extra soft, and has its own natural shape and size. So they are two different products.
Why are mini cowhides so special?
You won’t find them anywhere else in Europe—I’m the only one who makes them. Plus, each hide is unique in color and pattern, and by using them, we’re saving hides that would otherwise go to waste.
What size is a mini cowhide?
Always 90 × 60 cm. That standard size makes it easy to plan where to place it in the spot you have in mind.
Will I receive the exact cowhide shown in the photo?
Yes. Each hide is photographed, measured, and numbered individually. The hide in the photo is exactly the one you’ll receive—one of a kind.
