A pure black cowhide is the most dramatic and luxurious choice in the collection. Sleek, deep, and timeless—and because it’s naturally black, it has a warmth and depth that a dyed hide simply doesn’t have. Below, I’ll tell you what to look for.
Natural black, not dyed
Many black rugs on the market are dyed. Not mine: my black cowhides are naturally black. You can see and feel that in the soft sheen and subtle color nuances that only a genuine, untreated hide possesses. Not a uniform factory color, but a natural product with character. Completely black cattle—think of breeds like Angus—are rare, which is why a naturally black hide is truly a rarity.
Why choose a black cowhide?
Black is timeless and chic. A smooth black hide adds depth and a luxurious, refined look, and works beautifully as a contrast in a light interior or as an element that adds depth to a dark, rugged space. Because it has no busy pattern, it looks calm and stylish—texture and drama without any clutter.
Plus, it has all the familiar qualities of a genuine cowhide: it lasts for years, is naturally non-slip, and every piece is completely unique.
A rare find
Since natural black is so rare, stock is limited and availability fluctuates greatly. See a beautiful black hide come up? Don’t wait too long—once it’s gone, it’s gone—and because every hide is unique, that exact one won’t be available again.
Fits into any interior style
Black is a true all-rounder. It really shines in a modern, minimalist, or industrial interior, but works just as well as a sophisticated accent in a classic or rustic space. Pair it with light-colored floors and walls for maximum contrast, or with wood and metal for a warm, rugged look.
How to use a black cowhide in your home
- As a rug: lay it flat on a dry, level floor, in the middle of the living room, under the coffee table, or next to your bed. Sturdy and naturally non-slip.
- Over the back or armrest of your sofa: drape it loosely over the back or armrest for a sleek, luxurious touch.
- On the wall: as wall decor, a deep black hide is a dramatic eye-catcher and a beautiful alternative to a painting.

What size do you need?
I measure every hide individually, so you know exactly what you’re getting. For a spacious living room where the hide can really stand out, choose a large hide (XL or XXL) as a focal point rug; feel free to place it slightly under your couch or coffee table. For a smaller space or a cozy corner, an M/L, XS, or S is the perfect choice. Not sure about the size? In my blog post on how I measure the hides, I show you exactly how I do it. I’ve organized the hides by size:
- XS: smaller than 2.00 m²
- S: 2.01–2.99 m²
- M/L: 3.00–3.99 m²
- XL: starting at 4.00 m²
- XXL: the very largest pieces

Frequently Asked Questions
Are your black cowhides dyed?
No. Our black cowhides are 100% naturally black; the color comes from the animal itself, not from a dye bath. This gives them a soft sheen and subtle color nuances that a dyed hide doesn’t have.
Why is a black cowhide so rare?
A completely black coat is naturally rare; most cattle have some white or brown somewhere. As a result, natural black is scarce and stock is limited.
What breed does a black cowhide come from?
They often come from naturally black cattle, such as Angus. Because solid black is rare, the selection varies and each hide is unique.
Will I receive the exact cowhide shown in the photo?
Yes. Each hide is photographed, measured, and numbered individually. The hide in the photo is exactly the one you’ll receive—one of a kind.
What kind of interior is a black cowhide suitable for?
For virtually any interior. Black really stands out in a modern, minimalist, or industrial interior, but it also serves as a sophisticated, dramatic accent in a classic or rustic space.
How do I care for a black cowhide?
Very low maintenance. Cowhides have short hair: just vacuum them occasionally on a low setting, without a rotating brush. Shaking them out is difficult and not necessary. Dab any stains with a slightly damp cloth. You can find detailed tips on maintaining and cleaning cowhides.
