How do I maintain an animal skin?

You can enjoy your purchase for years with a little maintenance. Advantages of cowhides, sheepskins, goatskins, rabbit skins, reindeer skins and other animal skins are that they require very little maintenance. When removing dirt and stains always use a clean cloth or sponge.

Maintenance cowhide
A cowhide needs little to no maintenance. A cowhide is easy to maintain because it has short and strong hairs. With a little maintenance you can enjoy your cowhide for years!

Remove stains and dirt from cowhide:
- The cowhide can be vacuumed on a low setting when doing so, it is best to vacuum with the hair.
- Instead of vacuuming, the cowhide can also be beaten out with a mat beater.
- If moisture (drinks, etc.) is spilled on the cowhide, pat the area dry immediately (do not rub!) with a clean dry cloth.
- Stubborn stains can be removed with a little natural detergent.

- Do not put the cowhide in the washing machine or dryer!
- Do not let the cowhide dry near a heat source such as a heater, stove or in the sun.

Maintenance sheepskin / goatskin

Sheepskins and goatskins require little to no maintenance. If dirt or moisture has gotten on them you can use the points below when cleaning.

Remove stains and dirt from the sheepskin/goat skin:
- These can be gently whisked out with the hand or a mat whisk.
- If moisture (drinks, etc.) has been spilled on the area, pat dry immediately (do not rub!) with a clean dry cloth.
- Stubborn stains can be removed with a little natural detergent.
- Dried-up dirt can be removed with a slightly damp cloth.

- Do not put the sheepskin / goatskin in the washing machine or dryer!
- Do not let the sheepskin / goatskin dry near a heat source such as a heater, stove or in the sun.

Reindeer Skin Care
A reindeer skin needs very little care. The reindeer hide consists of an undercoat of down and a topcoat of hollow air-filled cover hairs. Because of the hollow hairs, a reindeer skin is not suitable for walking. With reindeer hides, the less you do to them, the longer they stay beautiful.

- The reindeer skin can be vacuumed on a very low setting with the hairs in the direction of the dust.
- If moisture (drinks, etc.) is spilled on the reindeer skin, pat the area dry immediately (do not rub!) with a clean dry cloth.
- Stubborn stains can be removed with a little natural detergent.

- Do not put the reindeer skin in the washing machine or dryer!
- Do not let the reindeer skin dry near a heat source such as a heater, stove or in the sun.

Don't overdo the maintenance then you can enjoy your cowhide, sheepskin, goatskin, rabbit skin or reindeer skin for years to come!

Will I get the skin or coat pictured?

You always get the skin or fur from the image. We photograph each skin and coat separately. Also, we always include the dimensions. Each animal skin also has a unique number. So you can easily choose the skin or fur that best meets your needs.

What about the smell?

Because all hides and skins are new, a slight but pleasant leather odor may be present. This smell is similar to, for example, a new leather couch. After a few days the leather smell will disappear by itself.

How is a skin or coat measured?

Because all hides and skins are natural products and unique in size, we measure them all separately for you. This gives you a good insight into the dimensions of the desired item. The skins and coats are measured including hair, wool and tail, taking the two longest and two widest points. So you always have the size and you can home or office already see how the dimensions come into its own in the room or workspace. Please note, this is a + / - size. It may vary slightly from the size listed. Sometimes slightly larger, sometimes slightly smaller, or a combination thereof. The images below are an example of measured skins and coats.

Can animal skin become discolored?

Skins and coats with natural coloring cannot discolor. With too much sunlight, dyed skins and coats may discolor slightly. Therefore, keep these out of sunlight, that way you can enjoy their beauty the longest.

Why does my pet skin have stitching / patches on the back?

Scars and/or cuts can be caused during the animal's life by such things as barbed wire and the processing process. These are then patched up with a patch or stitching on the back so that little to nothing can be seen on the front. This is a completely normal occurrence and happens regularly. We try to select hides and skins for you that contain as little stitching or patching as possible.

Can I have a skin or coat reserved?

Unfortunately it is not possible to reserve a skin or coat. Only one copy of each skin and coat is available. So you always have a unique item of which no second can be obtained.

I saw that you also have antlers & horns, is that correct?

If you would like to order an animal skin in combination with antlers or horns, you can order the animal skin through Leatheroverstock.com and the desired antlers or horns through Gewei.nl. Indicate with both orders that you want to receive them as one package. We will then ensure that it will be sent as one package (saves on shipping costs!). Please note, some items are too large or too fragile (think of a large red deer antler or a preparation) to be shipped. If this is the case, pickup is the only option. Choose at Leatheroverstock.com in the ordering process for the option "pick up". This way no shipping costs will be charged.
