The diversity of cowhides

The diversity in cattle breeds is enormous, for example, did you know that there are more than 800 different cattle breeds? Each breed of cattle has its own unique features, characteristics and charms. This variety is also why cowhides are so appreciated in interior design. The nice thing about cowhides is that they are truly natural products, so each cowhide is completely unique where no two are exactly the same.

The diversity of colors, sizes and patterns ensures that there will always be one that perfectly matches your interior design style whether you are all about the country style with earthy tones or maybe you are more of a sleek modern style then a cowhide can be extra playful and break up the tighter lines or maybe you are all about the industrial designs because of the sturdier look then a cowhide can bring extra warmth and softness. It is this combination of natural beauty and uniqueness that makes cowhides so popular for interior design.

The different colors of cowhides

With more than 800 different breeds of cattle and each cowhide 100% unique, the diversity is enormous. This diversity in colors, patterns and textures has been a source for designers and lovers of natural materials. Consequently, we increasingly see cowhides being used in interiors as rugs, for example. From the traditional black and white spotted (typical Dutch) hides, to the deep, rich brown tones and even they rare silver-gray hides. Let's see what colors are out there:

The classic colors among cowhides

The most familiar color in the Netherlands are the typical black and white spotted cowhides. These come, for example, from the Holstein Friesian breed, a truly Dutch breed of cattle. They are known worldwide for their good and high milk production. Besides the black and white hides, another real classic is the brown and white cowhides. Like the Holstein Friesians, these can be white with brown mottled but brown is one of the colors with the most variations in shades.

Cow skins with solid colors

Cowhides with solid colors are a wonderful addition to your interior. They bring warmth and atmosphere and their solid color makes them a subtle addition which exudes elegance and tranquility without being overpowering. Some possibilities among the solid skins are:

Black: Beautiful solid deep black cowhides are rare. They offer you a deep and rich atmosphere where they are a chic addition to minimalist interiors, for example, but they also come out very well in modern interiors.

White: These are even rarer than the solid black skins. Pure white is a color that occurs only very sporadically. These skins fit very nicely into interior styles with light colors and soft earth tones such as Scandinavian interiors and minimalist interiors. They contribute to a rustic atmosphere and calmness.

Brown: Brown cowhides can range from very light, almost beige, to deep chocolate brown. Solid brown cowhides bring a warm ambiance, perfect for creating an inviting and comfortable atmosphere. Brown actually fits almost any interior style, from country, to modern.

Cow skins with rare and unique colors

Besides the classic and solid colors, there are also very unique colors of cowhides. For example, there are gray cowhides, this is a rare color because there is simply not a particular breed of cattle that has a particular type / pattern of gray hides. Shades of gray can range from deep gray (almost anthracite) to very subtle light gray. Gray hides are one of the most popular colors because they look very nice in almost any interior style. Due to their desirability and limited availability, these skins do tend to be a bit more expensive.

There are also cowhides with taupe and champagne shades. These colors also fall under the rare colors because and is not a particular type of cattle breed that only have these colors. You see these color hides more often in the more luxurious interiors.

Cow skins with special patterns

The diversity among cowhides in terms of colors is so huge that in addition to the beautiful colors, they also offer different patterns, from solid to spotted, to mottled and everything in between. Some even more special than others. The special patterns in combination with the different colors makes that you can go for a very unique rug, some of these special patterns are:

Tricolor Normans (brown black and white)

Tricolor cowhides are mostly from the Normandy breed of cattle. This breed are known for their beautiful tricolor consisting of black, white and brown. The tan can be light in hue to deep dark brown. The spots can also be large, small or a combination of the two. But the beauty of these hides is that they can also carry the brindle (blended) pattern. In addition, Normandier cowhides tend to have slightly longer hairs.

In addition to the tricolor of the Normans, there may be hides that contain the tricolor but are not Normans. For example, these may be more "tightly" spotted like the typical Friesian Holstein cattle.

Brindle cowhides (blended)

Brindle, also called blended, is a combination of different colors running "striped" across the cowhide. Most often they are brown hides with black stripes but it can also happen that the hide is light in color such as beige with white stripes or white with gray stripes, the latter two are very rare. Despite the stripe pattern, the skins are still calm in pattern. Because they are mostly darker skins they bring a warm and cozy atmosphere.

Salt & pepper cowhides (speckled)

Can it all be a little more striking? Then check out a so-called salt & pepper cowhide. The name actually says it all, they contain a speckled color scheme. They can have virtually any color of speckles. Usually the base is white with black or brown speckles (or a combination of brown and black speckles). It's a playful pattern that you see more often in more modern interior styles.

Hereford cowhides (reddish brown with white)

The Hereford cattle breed is the only breed with the typical red-brown color. The contrast between the deep reddish brown and bright white creates a striking element and yet is balanced so that the cowhide radiates tranquility and warmth and therefore fits any type of interior. Often Herefords have a white "stripe" running down the neck and/or back and a white belly.

After these special cowhides with unique patterns and colors, there are many more variations and possibilities, but the colors just discussed are readily available. Choose and go for the colors and patterns that appeal to you the most and go for a unique, warm and especially cozy interior.

The different types of sizes of cowhides

In addition to the different colors and patterns, cowhides also come in different sizes. This allows you to perfectly match your new cowhide to where you want to put it. The smallest cowhides we have are our mini cowhides, which are die-cut and always have a size of 90x60cm. The smallest size cowhides we have are XS cowhides, these are smaller than 2.00 sq. ft. which makes them perfect for smaller spaces or if you simply don't want to cover your entire floor. In terms of meters, the XS skins are around 150cm in length.

In addition, we also have S-size skins of about 2.01 - 2.99 m². These are slightly larger than the XS skins but still subtle to use if you have for example and smaller room, such as living room or bedroom.

The M/L category cowhides, from 3.00 - 3.99 sq ft, are the most common sizes. This size is most commonly used for in your medium to large spaces such as your living room, bedroom, sitting room but also in your dining room. In addition, we also have the large XL hides, 4.00 - 4.25 m², these are also very suitable, and often used, for your living room and bedroom.

The very largest skins in our collection are the XXL skins of > 4.25 m², these are really huge and perfect if the cowhide is allowed to stand out and attract attention in your interior, they offer you a great luxurious look.

No two cowhides are the same in terms of size. Just like the colors and patterns, the sizes are also completely unique. Whether you want to give that smaller room extra ambiance or create a statement piece in your living room, the nice thing about the different sizes is that there is always a cowhide available that will fit exactly where you want it.

Different species (varieties) we have (regularly) in our collection

In our extensive collection of cowhides you will always find a generous and diverse range of different hides coming from different breeds. Our suppliers and tanneries always have a diverse range in stock where we always go for the most beautiful hides. Our collection therefore consists of a variety of sizes and colors. Cowhides that you can find in our collection include, but are not limited to:

Mixed breed cowhides

These are cattle that do not specifically belong to one particular breed. A typical meat cow as the tannery calls it. These can usually be recognized by their more unique coloring and patterns. Because they do not belong to a specific breed of cattle, these hides are truly one in of a kind.

Norman cowhides

Norman skins are known for their beautiful tricolor and slightly longer hair. They always bring you a cozy and warm atmosphere. This versatile bovine is known for their good milk production and meat which makes them beloved among farmers and keepers. Want to know more about Normans for your interior? Then also read the blog about Normandy cowhides.

Holstein Friesian cow skins

These cattle are truly Dutch and are known for their black and white spotted hides. The typical Dutch dairy cow. They are true classics among cowhides and Dutch interiors. Because these are dairy cows they are more limited in availability compared to, for example, mix breed cowhides.

Texas longhorn cowhides

We also regularly have cowhides of Texas longhorns in our collection. These are striking, yet subtle, because of their colors and patterns. They exude the real wild west and although they fit into any interior they obviously come into their own perfectly if you have a western interior.

Hereford cowhides

Hereford cowhides are known as the true red-brown breed of cattle. With their deep red-brown color, almost always combined with white, they bring a rustic beauty and warmth to your interior. Because of their natural red-brown tones, they fit very well into various interior styles.

In addition to the above hides, we very sporadically have special cowhides such as those of Scottish Highlanders, Galloways, Belgian Whiteblue, Sheeted cattle, etc. Each breed of cattle has its own unique colors, patterns and hair type. Whether you are looking for something traditional or something really special, you are sure to find what you are looking for in our collection.
