Brown-cream is the soft, warm choice among sheepskins: the coziness of brown combined with the tranquility of cream. Below, I’ll tell you what to look for.
Why a brown-cream sheepskin?
The soft transition between brown and cream makes each pelt subtle and unique, warm and natural, yet never overpowering. It pairs beautifully with wood tones, linen, and earthy colors, and fits into a rustic, modern, or bohemian interior. And a sheepskin is more than just beautiful: wool is a natural insulator (warm in winter, cool in summer), and it’s wonderfully soft to lie on—even for your dog or cat.
A natural transition from brown to cream
No two brown-cream pelts are alike. In one, the brown gradually blends into a creamy shade, while in another, you see more distinct shades. The wool length also varies, from short to long. My brown-cream hides come from breeds such as the Texel sheep and the Icelandic sheep, and are sourced from Europe, where the finest hides originate.
Supple, soft, and odor-neutral
Pick up a brown-cream pelt and you’ll immediately feel how supple the wool is—the result of extra brushing at the tannery, which ensures softness and a subtle sheen. I find the scent just as important. Cheaper hides with a limited tanning process often still smell like goat or farm—a scent that quickly makes itself known in the home. That’s why I’ve worked with my tanneries to adjust the tanning process so that scent is no longer present. The hide simply smells neutral.
Which size should you choose?
Size matters more than you might think when it comes to sheepskin: it has to suit both the location and your purpose. Here’s a quick rundown, in ascending order of size:
- S: smaller than 100 cm. The perfect accent: draped over a stool or dining chair, in a cozy corner, or as a snug spot for your dog or cat.
- M: 100 to 115 cm. A favorite and versatile choice. Looks great draped over an armchair or as a warm rug next to your bed. Not sure? You can almost always go with size M.
- L: 116 to 120 cm. Generous and full; looks great on a larger sofa or as a cozy accent on the floor.
- (X)XL: 121 cm and up. The largest, fullest skins: make a statement draped over a large sofa or used as a plush rug.
Measure your space and compare it to the dimensions listed for each skin. Keep in mind: a sheepskin has an organic shape—it’s not a rectangle—so use the length as a guideline.

A clean, sustainable tanning process
My hides are sustainably tanned according to the Oeko-Tex Standard 100, a tanning process free of harmful substances. Officially, they do not carry the certification mark, but they do meet the standard. And like all my hides, this one is also a byproduct of the meat industry; by having it tan, nothing goes to waste—and that is exactly why I started Leatheroverstock in the first place.
Frequently Asked Questions
What makes a brown-cream sheepskin special?
The soft transition from warm brown to creamy beige creates a subtle, natural two-tone effect without harsh contrast. Warm and cozy, yet calm—perfect with wood tones and earthy colors.
What’s the difference between black and white and brown and white?
Brown and white have a clearer, more striking contrast between brown and bright white. Brown-cream is softer and more subdued: the white here is a warm, creamy shade, making the transition more subtle.
Are the brown-cream sheepskins dyed?
No. I only sell sheepskins in their natural colors. The shades come from the sheep themselves.
Will I receive the exact skin shown in the photo?
Almost always. I photograph most skins individually and assign them a unique number, so you’ll receive exactly that skin. Some I sell “off the stack”; in that case, you’ll receive a sheepskin similar to the one in the photo, in the same color and size. The listing will specify which option applies.
How do I care for a brown-cream sheepskin?
Low-maintenance. Shake it out occasionally and comb it with a wool comb if necessary; for small stains, use a slightly damp cloth. Never put it in the washing machine. You can find detailed tips in the blog post “Cleaning and Caring for Sheepskin.”
